Pakistani National Charged in U.S. Assassination Plot
Federal authorities have charged a Pakistani national with alleged ties to the Iranian government with attempting to hire hitmen to assassinate former President Donald Trump and other U.S. politicians.
According to the unsealed criminal complaint, Asif Merchant, who faces one count of murder for hire, allegedly arrived in the U.S. in June to recruit people to carry out the assassination plot. The person he contacted was an FBI confidential informant.
Merchant was arrested in July after finalizing plot details and giving cash to undercover agents. There is no known connection between Merchant and the recent attempt on Trump’s life.
Harris Taps Walz for VP
Vice President Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her vice-presidential running mate on Tuesday, ending speculation about who would join her on the Democratic ticket heading into November’s election.
Prior to politics, Walz was a high school social studies teacher and football coach. He also served 24 years in the Army National Guard.
Walz, a dark horse candidate, beat out other more high-profile names like Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly after segments of the left objected to Shapiro’s stance on Israel and Kelly’s hesitation on pro-union legislation.
Walz has also drawn broad criticism for his Covid-19 lockdown policies and management of the 2020 riots in Minneapolis.
Later in the day, Walz joined Harris at a political rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
X Sues Advertisers
Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the World Federation of Advertisers and several major companies, including Mars and CVS Health, accusing them of unlawfully conspiring to boycott the site and causing it to lose billions in advertising revenue.
X says it has implemented advertiser safety measures similar to other social media platforms, designed to prevent ads from appearing next to inappropriate content.
