New Tornado Threat Looms Over Midwest, South
Severe storms were expected to batter the southern Plains, Midwest, and Southeast through Tuesday, putting more than 30 million Americans under threat from hurricane-force winds, flash flooding, and hail up to the size of tennis balls.
One enhanced risk zone covered nearly all of Tennessee and Kentucky, affecting 13.6 million people. Another broader area from Indianapolis to Atlanta—including St. Louis, Louisville, Memphis, and Birmingham—was under slight risk warnings. See a map here.
The storms follow a deadly stretch of extreme weather that left at least 28 dead and over 127,000 without power, mostly in Missouri and Kentucky.
World’s First Bladder Transplant Succeeds
Doctors at UCLA and USC have performed the world’s first successful human bladder transplant, giving 40-something father Oscar Larrainzar a new bladder and kidney during an eight-hour surgery on May 4.
The landmark procedure followed a four-year collaboration between the schools and is part of an ongoing UCLA clinical trial.
Larrainzar, who had been on dialysis for seven years, is reportedly doing well with fully functioning donor organs and no need for post-op dialysis. See photos here.
Surgeons say the breakthrough could offer new hope to patients with severe bladder dysfunction.
A native of Chicago, Wendt got his start in improv with the Second City comedy troupe before making it big in television. He later reprised the Norm role in Frasier and other series, and fronted his own short-lived CBS sitcom.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett—who voiced Norm’s unseen wife on Cheers—and their three children.
