As of today, adults flying domestically must show a REAL ID or federally approved alternative to clear TSA checkpoints. Most IDs with a star in the corner are compliant, while enhanced IDs from select states also qualify.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told Congress that while 81% of Americans already have compliant IDs, those without them can still fly using passports or tribal IDs.
TSA has warned that travelers without compliant ID will face delays and secondary screening, especially in states with low compliance, like New Jersey. At Boston’s Logan Airport, TSA is pulling aside travelers without compliant ID to avoid slowing down the main lines.
Passports, military IDs, and other official documents are still accepted, and a REAL ID is not required for everyday activities like driving or voting. See what’s needed in your state.
