Good morning! On this date in 1862, the modern bowling ball was invented. Unlike today’s sleek, resin-coated rollers, early bowling balls were made of wood and looked a bit like something Fred Flintstone would roll. (See Photos)

Only 3.4% of Journalists Identify as Republican
Only 3.4% of journalists identify as Republicans, compared to 36% who say they’re Democrats, according to a new study of 1,600 journalists by the Newhouse School of Public Communications. The other 52% are “Independent.”
The study is based on a 2022 survey, the latest in a series that began in 1971. At that time, 32% of journalists were Republican and 35% were Democrats. In 1982, only 19% of the media were Republicans; by 2013, ten years ago, it had dropped to 7%.
The study makes no claims about the causes of the decline. A recent Gallup poll showed that the GOP has far more distrust of the media than Democrats.
Appeals Keep Trump on Ballots (For Now)
Donald Trump will remain on the Colorado GOP primary ballot after the state Republican Party filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, halting the state’s Supreme Court ruling to remove him.
At the same time, Maine’s top election official, Shenna Bellows, removed Trump from the state’s 2024 ballot in a surprise decision on Thursday following an administrative hearing earlier this month, citing the 14th Amendment “insurrectionist ban.”
However, Bellows said her decision would not be enforced until the U.S. Supreme Court weighs in on the Colorado appeal.
Unique New Year’s Eve Date Excites Businesses
The once-in-a-century date of New Year’s Eve this year — 12/31/23, or 1-2-3-1-2-3 — has excited numerologists, sparked new merchandising opportunities, and primed Las Vegas for a record number of weddings.
In Vegas, this is what’s known as a “specialty date,” and better yet, it falls on a huge night of celebrating. The city hopes to beat the record of 4,492 weddings in one day set in 2007. The second biggest wedding day was 11/11/11.
Merchandise commemorating the 12/31/23 date is for sale on Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, and TikTok numerologists have videos on the “significance” of the number. It won’t occur again until New Year’s Eve, 2123.
