Trump to Federalize Illinois Guard
U.S. Border Patrol agents shot an armed woman on Chicago’s South Side on Saturday after an anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement mob rammed their vehicles and attempted to run them over, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Agents were on routine patrol near 39th Place and South Kedzie Avenue when 10 vehicles boxed them in and rammed their SUVs. They fired defensively at a female suspect who attempted to run them over.
The suspect was also allegedly armed with a semi-automatic weapon. No officers were seriously injured, and she drove herself to a hospital for treatment.
Both the White House and Gov. JB Pritzker confirmed that the Trump administration plans to federalize 300 Illinois National Guard members amid rising tensions in the state.
Supreme Court OKs Policy Shift
The Supreme Court cleared the way on Friday for the Trump administration to revoke a temporary legal protection for around 300,000 Venezuelan immigrants in the U.S.
In its latest emergency order, the high court stayed a lower court ruling from September, which stated the Trump administration wrongly terminated an 18-month extension of temporary protected status for the migrants.
Over the summer, the Trump administration won emergency appeals on immigration, research grants, and federal layoffs. The Supreme Court will convene on Monday for its new term with cases on conversion therapy, redistricting, gun rights, and transgender athletes.
Kavanaugh’s Would-Be Assassin Gets 8 Years
A California man who tried to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 received an eight-year, one-month federal prison sentence and a lifetime of supervised release on Friday.
The sentence imposed by a Biden-appointed federal judge fell far short of the 30 years to life requested by federal prosecutors. The Justice Department said it will appeal the sentence.
As part of his guilty plea, Nicholas Roske admitted to flying from Los Angeles to Dulles with a firearm and ammunition before Deputy U.S. Marshals saw him exit a taxi outside Kavanaugh’s home.
In explaining her sentencing decision, the judge expressed doubts about the government’s contention that Roske would have carried out the attempted assassination if he hadn’t seen the U.S. Marshals stationed outside Kavanaugh’s residence.

Whatever happened to Kenny Rogers Roasters?
In the early 1991, country music legend Kenny Rogers teamed up with former Kentucky Fried Chicken executive John Y. Brown Jr. to launch Kenny Rogers Roasters, a chain specializing in wood-fired rotisserie chicken.
At the time, America was shifting toward “healthier” fast food options, and roasted chicken felt like the perfect alternative to greasy fried buckets.
The restaurants were brightly lit, casual, and family-friendly, and by the mid-1990s, the chain exploded to over 350 locations worldwide and was even parodied in a famous episode of Seinfeld.
But the flame burned out quickly. By the late ’90s, competition from Boston Market and supermarket rotisserie chickens squeezed them hard. Overexpansion, lawsuits, rising costs, and a failure to stand out in the crowded fast-casual market led to financial trouble.
In 1998, Kenny Rogers Roasters filed for bankruptcy, and U.S. locations quickly dwindled. The brand actually still exists today—but mostly in Asia, where it has found surprising staying power, particularly in Malaysia and the Philippines.
While Americans remember it as a brief fad, it lives on as a nostalgic brand overseas.
