Good Morning! On this day in 1805, U.S. agent William Eaton led a small force of Marines and Berber fighters to capture the Tripolitan port city of Derna—an early victory that inspired the phrase “to the shores of Tripoli” in the Marine Corps hymn.

Press Dinner Shooter’s Manifesto Released
Suspected White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooter Cole Allen sent a manifesto to his family minutes before the attack, outlining plans to target administration officials from highest to lowest.
Allen said in his writings that he would use “buckshot rather than slugs” to “minimize casualties,” but added, “I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary … but I really hope it doesn’t come to that.”
While not mentioning the Correspondents’ Dinner by name, Allen wrote that the lack of security at the hotel was “insane,” noting that security was “all outside, focused on protestors and current arrivals” and that “no one thought about what happens if someone checks in the day before.”
Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe became the first person to officially record a sub-two-hour marathon on Sunday, winning the London Marathon with a time of one hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds.
That historic milestone belonged to Sawe alone for only 11 seconds, as Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, running in his first marathon, finished in 1:59.41.
Sawe broke the previous men’s marathon record by a massive 65 seconds after covering the second half of the race in 59:01 en route to retaining the London Marathon title.
Eliud Kipchoge, another Kenyan, recorded an unofficial sub-two-hour marathon in 2019 for an event in Vienna specifically tailored for the feat.
Glacier Stalls Everest’s Spring Season
Hundreds of climbers are stuck at Mount Everest’s base camp, unable to begin their ascent as a 100-foot block of unstable glacial ice seals off the route up the Nepalese side.
The ice sits in the notorious Khumbu Icefall, where Sherpa “icefall doctors” normally fix ropes and ladders. After two weeks searching for a workaround, they declared the route unsafe on Friday.
Adding to the worries, a U.N.-backed flood warning system for the region’s swollen glacial lakes has fallen into disrepair, with siren towers rusting and batteries stolen.
Nepal hiked permit fees to $15,000 this year, but demand stayed strong. The delay now risks dangerous traffic jams at the summit once the May weather window opens.
