SCOTUS Rejects Abortion Pill Ban
The Supreme Court unanimously refused to hear a case that would have banned the use of the abortion pill mifepristone. It was the court’s first abortion decision since overturning Roe v. Wade.
The court ruled that anti-abortion doctors and organizations couldn’t challenge the FDA’s approval of the drug because the groups don’t prescribe or use the pill themselves.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh noted that accepting their argument could lead to any professional group suing over policies they disagree with, citing examples like firefighters challenging building codes or teachers disputing immigration policies.
However, since the decision was based on a “legal technicality,” future legal challenges to the drug, which was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year, could be on the horizon.
Tesla OKs Musk’s $56 Billion Pay Package
Tesla shareholders approved CEO Elon Musk’s $56 billion pay package on Thursday, five months after a judge in Delaware ordered the company to rescind the package.
Musk’s compensation was one of many proposals approved by shareholders at their annual meeting in Austin, Texas.
They also agreed to relocate the company’s headquarters to Texas from Delaware, re-elected two board members, increased investor control, and lowered voting requirements to a simple majority.
Musk responded to the outcome by saying, “Hot damn, I love you guys. We have the most awesome shareholder base.” Tesla shares rose 2.9% in regular trading on Thursday to close at $182.47.
Emergency Declared as Rains Drench Florida
More storms are expected in South Florida today after intense downpours earlier this week produced flash flooding, blocked roads, and flight delays and cancellations across the region.
Governor Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency late Wednesday for five South Florida counties where rain totals have reached up to 25 inches. Eight million people remain under a flood watch.
Miami International and Ft. Lauderdale Airports reported nearly half of all flights were delayed, including the flight for the Florida Panthers, who were on their way to a Stanley Cup Final game in Canada on Thursday.
Fort Lauderdale, where the mayor declared a local state of emergency, received its entire average June rainfall of around 9.5 inches in just 24 hours on Wednesday.
