Paralyzed Man Defies Odds in Marathon

Darren Awol, 42, a London man paralyzed from the waist down after a 2011 shooting, took on the London Marathon last week. He walked part of the course with crutches and used a wheelchair for the rest.

Shot in the back during an unprovoked attack, Awol suffered a severe spinal cord injury and lost control and sensation below the waist. Told he’d never walk again, he endured years of physical and mental hardship, at times contemplating suicide, before slowly rebuilding his strength.

He credits his recovery to relentless gym therapy, the motivation of having a young son, and pure determination. Along the way, he lost 140 pounds.

Awol is raising funds to build a rehab center for people with spinal cord injuries, strokes, MS, and cerebral palsy. He says he hopes his story shows others that even when the odds are stacked against you, it’s still possible to turn up for yourself. Follow him on Instagram here.

Indiana Boy Rescues Stranded Calf

Nine-year-old Wyatt Ban is being praised for his quick thinking after rescuing a stranded calf along a rural road in Indiana.

Driving home with his mom, Morgan, the boy noticed a distressed cow and persuaded her to turn around.

Acting fast, he slipped through a barbed wire fence and found the cow’s calf stuck in a steep creek bank. With his mom, filming from the car, Wyatt carefully nudged the calf up the bank and out of the water.

The calf and mother were safely reunited, and Morgan beamed with pride: “He knew just what to do.”
