One-third of America’s local newspapers have disappeared in the last 20 years, a new study shows. There are roughly 6,000 newspapers left in the U.S. today, down from nearly 9,000 in 2005 (See Map).
The trend goes deeper than the overall numbers suggest; many local news operations are actually “ghost newspapers,” published with zero local staff by national chains such as Gannett and Lee Enterprises. And of the 6,000 newspapers left, 5,000 only produce weekly editions.
According to the study, a drop in advertising dollars is largely to blame for the shutdowns, and most of the towns that lose a local newspaper don’t get a replacement—print or digital.

Santos Won’t Run Again, Won’t Resign
The House Ethics Committee issued a scathing report on the fundraising activities of Rep. George Santos and plans to file a motion to expel the New York Republican from Congress.
The House report details campaign funds being spent at spas, resorts, and luxury stores, as well as paying down Santos’ personal credit cards. He faces criminal charges for campaign finance fraud as well.
Santos said Thursday that he wouldn’t run for re-election but had no plans to leave Congress voluntarily before his term ends. His fellow New York Republicans are among those pushing for his expulsion.
Giant SpaceX Rocket Set for Saturday Launch
Elon Musk’s giant SpaceX “Starship” rocket is tentatively scheduled to blast off on its second test launch on Saturday morning. The first attempt misfired, and the rocket blew up, spreading debris across several miles.
The Starship rocket is the biggest and most powerful space vehicle ever built, standing 400 feet tall. SpaceX has a $3 billion NASA contract to use the rocket to land American astronauts on the moon as early as 2025.
The test launch was originally scheduled for today but was delayed for a part replacement. If there are no more delays, it’ll be streamed live at Space.com beginning at 7:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.
