Speaker Race Stalls as GOP Weighs Options
The House Speaker race hit a wall Thursday as Jim Jordan failed to win enough votes, and the GOP shot down a plan to empower Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry as temporary Speaker until January.
Jordan says he will call for a third vote this morning and continue through the weekend, if necessary. His opponents haven’t budged either, as they complained of threats they’ve received for not supporting him.
Hopes for a compromise on McHenry rose Thursday morning when Jordan endorsed the idea, but it drew little overall support.
Automakers Pull Back on Electric Car Production
GM, Ford, and Tesla have all announced slowdowns in production of electric vehicles, citing reduced demand due to pricing and high interest rates. Currently, EVs have a market share of about 8% in the U.S.
GM is delaying production of Chevy Silverado and GM Sierra EVs by a year, and Ford is cutting back shifts at the plant building its F-150 pickup EV.
Tesla’s first shipment of its long-awaited Cybertruck is set for Nov. 30, but owner Elon Musk warned the production ramp-up would be slow.
The concern over falling demand hit EV stocks this week, particularly Tesla, down 9% at one point. Rivian, Lucid Group, and Fisker fell between 3.3% and 4.5%.
$7 a Share for Mickey Mantle’s Old House
Baseball fans and investors can soon own a share of Mickey Mantle’s childhood home in Commerce, Oklahoma, for only $7. Of course, they’ll join 47,000 other potential buyers eager to own a piece of history and share in any potential profit.
Investors will have a say in what happens to the property, including options to make it a museum or monetize it as an overnight destination. The 675-square-foot house has been empty for decades; Rally bought it last year for $175,000.
