Penn President Resigns Over Testimony

University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned this weekend in the backlash from her testimony in Congress last week about handling antisemitism on campus. Scott Bok, chairman of Penn’s board of trustees, also resigned.

Critics in Congress have called for the resignation of the presidents of Harvard and MIT as well, who also refused to directly condemn calls for Jewish genocide as hate speech. Two mobile vans at Harvard called for President Claudine Gay to step down.

“One down. Two to go,” said House Rep. Elise Stefanik, who posed the antisemitism question to the college presidents at Tuesday’s hearing. The House has opened an investigation into speech codes at the three campuses.

Ohtani Signs $700 Million Deal with Dodgers

Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani has signed the biggest free-agent deal in history, agreeing to a 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a record $700 million.

Ohtani, a stellar pitcher and slugger for the California Angels the past six seasons, won the Most Valuable Player award in 2021 and 2023 and finished second in 2022, despite the Angels never being serious contenders.

His new deal eclipses the previous record, held by his former Angels teammate Mike Trout, at $426 million over 12 years. It’s also nearly double what Ohtani was earning in his Angels contract.

EU Sets World’s First Rules on AI

Europe has agreed to the world’s first set of rules regulating artificial intelligence, potentially a model for the United States to follow as regulators here grapple with AI’s potential consequences.

The rules, hashed out by various institutions in the European Union, target usage of AI against citizens in the form of face recognition, scoring of social behavior, manipulative algorithms, and emotion recognition.

It also takes aim at the foundational development of new AI systems, but only in a general way, calling for transparency and, in some cases, preliminary model evaluations and testing before new systems can be rolled out.
