Prosecutor Takes Trump to Supreme Court

Special Counsel Jack Smith has taken the extraordinary step of asking the Supreme Court to rule immediately on whether Donald Trump can claim presidential immunity for his statements and actions as president.

Trump’s lawyers asked an appeals court to rule on that very issue this week, freezing Smith’s case against Trump until a decision was made. Instead, Smith jumped the line with an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Court said Monday afternoon that it would consider the request. If they take the case and rule for Trump, that would end Smith’s prosecution. It would still go through the normal appeals process if they refuse to take it up.

Three Industries Driving U.S. Job Growth

Job growth in the United States has appeared robust this year, but a close analysis shows that it’s being driven very narrowly by three sectors: Health care, government employment, and hospitality.

The economy added nearly 200,000 jobs in November alone, but 83% came from those three sectors, plus 28,000 manufacturing jobs, mainly striking autoworkers returning to work. Only 5,000 jobs were in other sectors.

Retail actually lost 38,000 jobs, and other industries were flat or down as well. Economists say this narrow zone of job growth is partly from design, as the Federal Reserve works to cool off the economy.

List: Ranking America’s Richest Politicians

A ranking of the wealthiest politicians in America shows Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker at the top, with a net worth of $3.4 billion, followed by Donald Trump at $2 billion. A chart illustrating the 12 richest can be found here.

The Top 12 list includes three billionaires, but even the least wealthy on the list — Reps. Scott Peters and Michael McCaul — have a net worth of roughly $200 million. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis comes in at $400 million, as does Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
