Rebels Oust Syria’s Assad
The Syrian government collapsed Sunday morning, ending a long civil war, when rebels took control of the capital city, Damascus.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia where his Kremlin allies offered asylum. His overthrow marks the end of 50 years of Assad family rule in the country.
The rebel victory came with surprising speed after years of stalemate. The 10-day offensive moved from Aleppo to Hama to Homs to Damascus, where its success culminated in mobs looting the presidential palace. You can see video of that here.
