U.S. Troops Killed in Mideast Attack
Three U.S. soldiers were killed and dozens were wounded in a drone attack Saturday on American forces in Jordan, marking a sharp escalation of hostilities in the region.
President Biden blamed Iran-backed groups for the attack, the first time U.S. troops have been killed since the Israel-Hamas war began in October. Some House Republicans criticized Biden for letting Iran get away with continuing attacks.
U.S. officials issued a warning to the militant group: “We will respond in a time and place of our choosing,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.
House GOP Readies Mayorkas Impeachment
House Republicans released two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, charging him with a “breach of the public trust” over the failure to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.
Impeachment of a Cabinet member is a rare step, and it’s happening over the protest of Democrats, who say Mayorkas hasn’t committed the “high crimes and misdemeanors” necessary for impeachment.
The House Homeland Security Committee will mark up the resolution Tuesday, saying Mayorkas has refused to enforce immigration laws. House Speaker Mike Johnson pledged to take it to the House floor “as soon as possible.”
Chiefs, 49ers to Meet Again in Super Bowl
And then there were two: The San Francisco 49ers will play the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Feb. 11—a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl that the Chiefs won.
The 49ers won the NFC championship with a big comeback against the Detroit Lions; they were down 24-7 at halftime but scored 27 straight points in the 2nd half to get the win.
Earlier Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC championship, defeating the Baltimore Ravens 17-10. Kansas City’s Travis Kelce had 11 catches for 116 yards, setting a new NFL record for most catches in the post-season.
Perhaps the most surprising play in either game was a pass thrown by Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson that he caught for a 13-yard gain. Here’s the video.
