Good Morning! On this day in 2006, Twitter launched publicly. The idea emerged from a brainstorming session: an SMS service for sharing brief “status” updates, inspired by birds’ chirps.
Today we’re covering the ongoing investigation into the shocking attack at former President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania, as well as opening day of the Republican National Convention as the 2024 election keeps twisting in new directions. Hang on tight!

New Details Emerge on Trump Shooting
Police said Sunday that Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old would-be assassin at former President Trump’s rally on Saturday, had explosives in his car and at home. He was shot and killed immediately after shooting at Trump.
No motive has been identified yet for the shooting, and despite his sniper skills, all branches of the military told AP they had no record of him serving. He missed Trump by inches from a rooftop 150 yards away.
Officials also identified the rally attendee killed by Crooks. He was a 50-year-old volunteer fireman named Corey Comperatore, whom police said died shielding his family as gunshots rang out. Two other victims remain hospitalized.
Trump, who was nicked in the ear, posted calls for national unity and sent condolences to the victims’ families. President Biden also spoke to the nation on the need for unity from the Oval Office on Sunday night. His campaign on Saturday pulled all its TV ads.
GOP National Convention Begins Today
The Republican National Convention opens today under heavy security at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, with the schedule continuing as planned despite the shock of Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Trump.
Trump arrived in Milwaukee Sunday, less than 24 hours after being bloodied by a bullet on Saturday. The event is expected to bring approximately 50,000 politicians, delegates, and media personnel to the city.
The convention features themed days, focusing Monday on economics, Tuesday on immigration and crime, Wednesday on national security, and concludes with Trump’s nomination and acceptance speech on Thursday. The full calendar of events is here.
A retirement fund of $1 million would last you less than 10 years in Hawaii, but more than 20 years in West Virginia, according to a new study of retirement costs in every state.
The study considered factors such as groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare costs to calculate the total annual expenditures for a single person in each state.
Outside of the most expensive states, a $1 million fund lasts on average between 16-18 years in most states. For example, in Texas it would last over 18 years, and in Florida over 17 years. The complete list of states is here.
