Happy Sunday! On this date in 1789, hundreds of Parisians stormed the Bastille fortress in one of the decisive moments of the French Revolution. Bastille Day is still celebrated as a holiday in France and many French restaurants. (See Image)
Yesterday was a solemn day in American history, and we’re thankful that it wasn’t worse—as it easily could have been. Our lead story today is, of course, the attempted assassination of President Trump, and we expect to include follow-up stories throughout the week.
Today’s edition is sponsored by Empire Today, with special deals for Flyover readers on top quality flooring.
President Trump Shot at Rally
President Donald Trump was shot yesterday.
He was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a would-be assassin fired a rifle from a nearby rooftop, striking Trump in the right ear. See unedited video of the moment here. (Warning, disturbing footage).
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump later said in a statement. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.”
The Secret Service quickly closed in to protect President Trump, and a sniper team returned fire and killed Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old man identified by the FBI as the shooter. As the Secret Service began rushing Trump toward the motorcade, the President pumped his fist repeatedly and shouted, “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
A man who witnessed Crooks crawling with a rifle on a rooftop said he alerted police, but the response was too slow to stop the shooting. Questions are swirling about how a shooter was able to access the rooftop without being engaged, and House Speaker Mike Johnson has promised a full investigation.
A photographer captured an incredible photo of the President holding his fist aloft as the Secret Service tried to hurry him along, with blood streaking down his face and an American flag in the background.
A male audience member was killed in the attack, as described by a doctor who attempted to save his life. (Video: graphic warning).
President Trump was seen walking off his plane in New Jersey last night. He’s still expected to appear at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week.
Israeli Airstrike Kills At Least 90
An Israeli airstrike in Gaza targeting Muhammad Deif, thought to be the mastermind behind the October 7th terror attacks in Israel, and his deputy, Rafa’a Salameh, resulted in at least 90 deaths Saturday.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a statement that it is uncertain whether the attack killed the two men, but he promised that “one way or another,” Israel will eliminate all Hamas leadership.
Subscription Websites Accused of Deception
The Federal Trade Commission this week released a study accusing many subscription-based websites of using manipulative design techniques called “dark patterns” to push customers into taking actions they wouldn’t otherwise.
These tactics, found in over 75% of websites and apps examined, include making it difficult to cancel subscriptions, deliberately using confusing language in privacy policies, and hiding important consumer information.
The release of the new report could signal that the FTC is planning to pay increased attention to this type of consumer fraud, which they described in terms like sneaking, obstruction, nagging, forced action and others.
