Heat Wave Risk Coming for Much of U.S.
Forecasters have warned residents from the Midwest and Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast to expect a dangerous and potentially record-breaking June heat wave this week and continuing into the coming weeks.
Big cities that will be affected include Chicago, Columbus, Albany, Syracuse, Pittsburg, Washington, D.C., New York City, Hartford, and Boston. Even northern Maine is likely to see temperatures soar into the upper 90s.
Officials anticipate an increase in demand for electricity and elevated risks to people with a high risk of heat stress or illness due to a lack of effective cooling or hydration.
While the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and East roast, some snow could fall in the Rockies as an unusually cold air mass settles in.
Growing California Wildfire Forces Evacuations
A Southern California wildfire dubbed the “Post Fire” has doubled since Saturday, forcing the evacuation of at least 1,200 campers, off-roaders, and hikers from the Hungry Valley recreation area. You can see the video of the fire here.
Authorities believe the blaze began just before 2 p.m. on Saturday and quickly spread to 5,000 acres, fueled by high winds and dry brush.
The steep mountainous terrain made it difficult for firefighters to reach the flames, and by Sunday, the fire had spread to 12,265 acres and was just 2 percent contained (AP)
Evacuation warnings are in place south of Pyramid Lake between Old Ridge Route and the Los Angeles County line as more than 300 firefighters are working to construct a fire perimeter. (The Hill)
DeChambeau Wins Dramatic US Open
Bryson DeChambeau won his second US Open trophy Sunday in a dramatic one-stroke victory that ended with Rory McIlroy missing a short putt on the final hole while DeChambeau scrambled out of trouble with a sensational sand shot.
McIlroy, a former US Open winner himself, hasn’t won a major tournament since 2014 but came close Sunday. He missed two three-foot putts in the final holes, costing himself a victory this year. He declined to be interviewed after the tournament.
DeChambeau dedicated his victory to Payne Stewart, who won the tournament 25 years ago by draining a 15-foot putt to beat Phil Mickelson by one shot. Both DeChambeau and Stewart attended Southern Methodist University.
