USS Ford Enters Caribbean Near Venezuela
The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, the nation’s most advanced, arrived in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday, completing the largest U.S. military buildup in the region in generations, dubbed Operation Southern Spear.
The Trump administration stated the deployment, which includes a carrier strike group with fighter jets and guided-missile destroyers, is focused on a large-scale counterdrug operation targeting “narco-terrorism.”
The U.S. government has repeatedly asserted that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is complicit in drug smuggling operations, having formally indicted him in 2020 as the leader of a cocaine trafficking network. Here’s an overview of the situation.
The buildup follows a series of recent U.S. strikes against alleged drug-smuggling vessels that have killed at least 83 people, and comes as President Trump has told reporters he “sort of made up [his] mind” on potential military operations in Venezuela.

UK Cracks Down on Asylum Rules
The United Kingdom’s Labour government is launching a major crackdown on asylum rules, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood warning that illegal migration is “tearing the country apart” and eroding public support for the system.
The new measures will require people granted asylum to wait 20 years instead of the current five before they can apply for permanent settlement, and their refugee status will be regularly reviewed to ensure their home countries are not deemed safe for return.
Under the new plan, housing and financial aid will no longer be guaranteed—especially for asylum seekers who are allowed to work but choose not to. Watch Mahmood explain the proposal.
The plan is already facing opposition from both political sides, with Conservatives demanding even faster deportations and some Labour members of the parliament expressing concern over the government’s increasingly hardline stance.

Dog Shoots Owner in the Back
A Pennsylvania man was hospitalized and required multiple surgeries after his dog accidentally shot him in the back on Tuesday night in Shillington.
The 53-year-old victim told police he was cleaning his shotgun and had placed it on the bed, just before one of his dogs jumped onto the bed and caused the weapon to fire.
Officials, who were initially informed that a dog had set the gun off, found the man conscious on the floor with a wound to his lower back.
The shooting appears to be accidental, but police are still investigating the incident, which occurred with two other dogs and the victim’s son present in the residence.
