Good Morning! On this day in 1939, Germany invaded Poland in a blitzkrieg by land and air, launching World War II. Great Britain responded with bombing raids over Germany three days later.
Tennis players aren’t immune to exes showing up and nearly throwing off their game. Sometimes the real opponent isn’t across the net, but in the crowd. Read more below.
Today’s and Tuesday’s editions are slightly abbreviated as our staff takes time off for the holiday with their families. We’ll be back in full force on Wednesday.

Chicago Readies for National Guard Deployment
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson issued an executive order Saturday to ensure law enforcement in the Windy City remains subject to the Chicago Police Department, not the federal troops President Trump has hinted he will deploy there.
The president has yet to confirm a deployment with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D), who has labeled any such action as an “invasion.”
Meanwhile, Trump criticized Pritzker on social media over Chicago’s crime and the city’s status as having one of the nation’s highest homicide rates.
Reports have surfaced that up to 250 federal troops have been assigned to Chicago. Border Czar Tom Homan confirmed this week that “a large contingent” of ICE officers would conduct large-scale deportation operations there.

Rudy Giuliani Injured in Freak Car Accident
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday night, according to his spokesman, Michael Ragusa.
Ragusa said Giuliani’s rental car was struck from behind at high speed, resulting in a broken vertebra and multiple bruises and cuts.
Ragusa explained that Giuliani was flagged down by a victim of domestic violence, stayed with the person until police arrived, and was hit after reentering his rental car.
Giuliani will likely remain in the Manchester-area hospital for two or three more days, but is said to be recovering and “in good spirits.”

Biggest US Recessions by Duration
The U.S. has experienced 34 recessions since 1855, but they’ve become shorter and less frequent in recent decades. See a chart here.
Before World War II, recessions occurred roughly every four years and could last over two years, but since 1945, the average length has shrunk to just 10 months. Read about the main recessions here.
The Panic of 1873 lasted 65 months, while the COVID-19 recession in 2020 lasted only two. Improved monetary policy, automatic stabilizers like unemployment insurance, and quicker federal intervention have helped soften economic blows.
Today, downturns rarely escalate into full depressions, marking a major shift in how the U.S. economy weathers financial storms.
