Welcome to the weekend! On this day in 1959, musician Buddy Holly died in a plane crash. Bad weather forced a small plane down with Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson Jr. all on board. The day became known as “The Day the Music Died” after Don McLean immortalized the incident in his song American Pie.

U.S. Warplanes Strike Targets in Middle East

U.S. forces struck at least 85 Iranian targets in Iraq and Syria on Friday.

President Biden ordered the strikes in retaliation to the drone attack in Jordan that killed 3 American soldiers, although the administration has emphasized that it doesn’t want open conflict with Iran.

Both manned and unmanned aircraft attacked command and control centers and munitions dumps used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards and affiliated militia groups.

This is the first substantial response by the Biden administration after more than 160 attacks on U.S. positions in the region.

Carl Weathers Dead at 76

Actor Carl Weathers died in his sleep on Thursday.

His family released a statement saying that he “died peacefully at home,” but no cause of death was given.

Weathers was most famous for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky series, and he appeared in a slew of other successful films and TV shows—including Predator, Happy Gilmore, Arrested Development, and The Mandalorian.

After playing football at San Diego State and a brief stint in the NFL, he completed his B.A. in drama at San Francisco University and landed his first credited role in Good Times.

Weathers is survived by his two sons.

NFL Team Asks for Stolen Money Back

The Jacksonville Jaguars are asking FanDuel, an online sports betting platform, to return some or all of the $20 million stolen and gambled away by former employee Amit Patel.

Patel served as a finance manager for the Jaguars and embezzled a total of $22 million over four years through the company’s virtual credit card system.

He pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of engaging in an illegal monetary transaction last December, and he could receive up to 30 years in prison when sentenced in March.
