SCOTUS Cuts Federal Agencies’ Power
The Supreme Court overturned the 40-year-old Chevron deference doctrine in a major ruling on Friday. The doctrine had given federal agencies the power to interpret ambiguous laws and required courts to defer to their decisions.
In a 6-3 ruling, the conservative justices reined in that authority, saying instead that courts must independently decide on regulatory interpretations, rather than agency officials.
The decision, which reflects the court’s skepticism toward expansive regulatory powers by the government, was celebrated by business and conservative groups.
Uvalde Ex-Chief Indicted for Child Endangerment
Former Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo was indicted on Friday on 10 counts of abandoning and endangering children during the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting that resulted in the deaths of 19 children and two teachers.
Arredondo is accused of failing to identify the incident as an active shooter situation, not following established active shooter protocols, and causing significant delays in confronting the gunman. He was booked and released on bail.
Former officer Adrian Gonzales was also indicted on similar charges.
Wildfires Prompt Evacuations
A wildfire dubbed the Boulder View Fire, which started around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, is burning north of Scottsdale, Arizona.
By Friday, it had consumed 3,200 acres, with flames reaching 20-40 feet in some areas. The fire is 0% contained, and approximately 60 people have been evacuated.
Officials suspect the fire was human-caused but are still investigating. Here is a video.
As of Friday, multiple wildfires were also active across Oregon. The largest, the Darlene 3 Fire near La Pine in central Oregon, has expanded to 3,889 acres and is 30% contained. This fire has prompted evacuation orders for nearby residents.
