Trump Rejects War Powers Act Deadline
The Trump administration says the war with Iran was ended by the temporary April 7 truce, pausing the 60-day War Powers Act process that would have required congressional approval for the war as of yesterday’s deadline.
Democrats dispute that interpretation, noting the War Powers statute contains no provision for pausing the deadline. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth offered a different view during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee this week, saying the clock can “pause or stop” during a ceasefire.
The Senate on Thursday rejected a sixth attempt by Democrats to pass a war powers resolution. Most Republicans have stood behind the president, though some have indicated they could shift after the deadline passes.
Iran made a new proposal for talks, but President Trump on Friday turned it down. “Iran wants to make a deal, but I’m not satisfied with it,“ Trump said.

Stocks Hit Post-Pandemic Highs in April
U.S. stocks closed out April 2026 with their strongest monthly performance since the pandemic rebound in 2020. The S&P 500 surged over 10% and closed above 7,200 for the first time, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped more than 15%.
Strong earnings from major tech companies fueled the rally, with Alphabet climbing 34% in April for its best month since 2004. Semiconductors were particularly dominant, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF rising about 40%.
The gains came despite volatile oil prices tied to the U.S.-Iran conflict and economic data showing GDP growth below expectations. Hopes for easing Middle East tensions and a robust earnings season kept investor sentiment positive.

Place Your Bets, It’s Kentucky Derby Day
Twenty horses will trot into the Churchill Downs starting gate today for the 152nd Kentucky Derby, the most prestigious event in American thoroughbred racing. The two-minute race starts at 6:57 p.m. ET, and here’s how to watch.
Renegade and So Happy are betting favorites to win the race (though odds can change up to post time), followed by The Puma, Further Ado, and Commandment. No Derby favorite has won since 2018, marking seven straight years of underdog victories.
The Derby is one of the biggest gambling events of the year. Last year’s race drew a record $234 million in wagers on the race alone, and $349 million bet across the full Derby Day card.
