Good Morning! On this day in 1986, Willie Shoemaker, 54, guided 17-1 long shot Ferdinand to a Kentucky Derby win, becoming the race’s oldest winning jockey and redeeming his infamous 1957 finish-line misjudgment. See the 1986 Derby recap here.
Tab broke new ground in the soft drink space in the early 1960s, eventually becoming the most widely recognized America diet soda. Eventually it lost ground to a follow-up product in the Coca-Cola line, as shown in today’s “Whatever Happened To…“
In case you missed it, this week on The Flyover Podcast, host Ayla Brown breaks down the long-running feud between Jimmy Kimmel and President Trump. What started as a late-night appearance years ago has turned into a nearly decade-long back-and-forth involving media giants, political power, and plenty of sharp words. How did it all begin, and where does it stand today? Listen here.

GOP-led States Consider Map Redraws
The Republican governors of Tennessee and Alabama called state lawmakers into special sessions on Friday, the first steps to potentially redraw congressional maps after the Supreme Court narrowed the Voting Rights Act.
Alabama lawmakers are set to convene in Montgomery on Monday, as the state awaits a decision from the Supreme Court about whether it can revert to a previous congressional map ahead of the November midterm elections. The Republican-controlled legislature was ordered by the Supreme Court in 2023 to include a second majority-black congressional district.
Beginning Tuesday, Tennessee lawmakers could draw a new map that would favor Republicans in all nine House districts, targeting the Memphis-based seat currently held by Democrat Steve Cohen.
The maneuver was made possible by the Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday. In a 6-3 ruling, the high court struck down a Louisiana map that includes two majority-black House districts, upholding a lower court ruling that found state lawmakers relied too heavily on race.

Court Blocks Abortion Pill Access by Mail, Telehealth
A federal appeals court ruled unanimously on Friday to block the ability of doctors to prescribe the abortion pill mifepristone through telehealth and mail delivery.
The court issued a temporary nationwide injunction that reinstates a requirement that mifepristone must be prescribed and dispensed in person. The Food and Drug Administration permanently lifted the in-person requirement in 2023 after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Telehealth prescriptions have been key to maintaining abortion access in states that outlawed or restricted the practice.
Surveys have found that the majority of abortions in the U.S. are provided via pills and that about 1 in 4 abortions nationally are prescribed via telehealth.

Whatever happened to Tab diet soda?
Tab may be the only soft drink that managed to invent a category, lose it to its own successor, and still inspire petitions for its return decades later.
Introduced by Coca-Cola in 1963, Tab was the company’s first diet drink, arriving as calorie counting began to enter the American mainstream. Early ads targeted women, tying the drink, with its iconic pink can, to slimness and control.
Here’s one of their commercials, featuring the catchy Tab jingle. The strategy worked. By the 1970s, Tab was the dominant diet soda in the United States and helped define an entirely new category.
Its demise began with the success of a different kind. In 1982, Coca-Cola launched Diet Coke, a sleeker product backed by the company’s flagship brand. Consumers migrated quickly.
Tab, once the innovator, became the legacy option. Health scares around saccharin and recipe tweaks did not help. By the 1990s, Tab had faded from the mainstream, kept alive largely out of habit and loyalty.
That loyalty proved unusually durable. Tab developed a devoted following of drinkers who refused to switch, often describing the taste as irreplaceable. When rumors of discontinuation surfaced, fans stockpiled cases and traded tips on where to find remaining cans.
Coca-Cola finally ended production in 2020, citing a need to streamline its portfolio. The reaction was immediate. Petitions circulated, advocacy groups formed, and diehards pushed for a comeback.
Tab’s story is not just about a product that lost market share: It’s about what happens when a brand outlives its moment but not its core appeal.
