Good Morning! On this day in 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt issued Proclamation 780 admitting Oklahoma—formed by merging the Indian and Oklahoma Territories—as the 46th state. Weeks later, he told Congress Oklahoma had a strong future due to its natural resources.
Howard Johnson’s restaurants and hotels dotted the American landscape beginning in the 1960s, but the brand faltered amid fast food competition, as detailed in today’s “Whatever Happened To…”
Through today’s sponsor, Prison Fellowship International, you can help bring the hope of Jesus to prisoners worldwide by giving them access to audio Bibles in their own languages—so even those who can’t read can finally hear and experience the life-changing power of Scripture.
Trump Repudiates Marjorie Taylor Greene
President Trump announced on Truth Social on Friday that he was withdrawing his support for Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling her a “ranting lunatic.”
The president vowed “complete and unyielding support” to any conservative primary challenger leading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Greene, a longtime Trump ally, responded with a post on X on Saturday, writing, “I never thought that fighting to release the Epstein files, defending women who were victims of rape, and fighting to expose the web of rich powerful elites would have caused this, but here we are…There needs to be a new way forward.”
The criticism between the two erupted amid the release of email exchanges from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, in which the president’s name is mentioned. Greene was among four Republicans to sign a discharge petition to force a vote in the House on requiring the Department of Justice to release all information about its probe of the disgraced financier.
FAA Rolls Back Flight Cuts
The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday reduced flight cuts by half required at 40 U.S. airports as the nation’s aviation system recovers after the government shutdown.
The FAA said airlines will need to cut only 3% of flights, down from the current 6% mandated during the stalemate. The rollback comes as staffing levels for air traffic controllers have improved since they missed two paychecks.
The FAA is about 3,500 air traffic controllers short of targeted staffing levels. Many had been working mandatory overtime and six-day weeks even before the shutdown led to working without pay.

Whatever happened to Howard Johnson’s?
For decades, spotting an orange roof on the horizon meant you’d found a Howard Johnson’s. To travelers, HoJo wasn’t just a restaurant or motel: It was a promise of delicious fried clams, frankforts, and 28 flavors of ice cream, no matter where you were.
How did that happen?
The saga began 100 years ago in 1925, when Howard Deering Johnson transformed a tiny Quincy, Massachusetts, soda shop into a sensation with his rich, high-butterfat ice cream. Demand exploded, and Johnson embraced a new idea: he let independent operators use his name, menu, and recipes in exchange for a fee.
This proto-franchising model allowed HoJo to expand rapidly just as Americans were discovering the joy of long-distance car travel. At its peak in the 1960s, Howard Johnson’s was the largest restaurant chain in America, instantly recognizable with its bright orange roofs and cupolas.
Then the decline hit. Competing fast-food chains delivered quicker, cheaper meals. HoJo’s buildings grew dated, franchise standards slipped, and new corporate owners treated the company more like a real-estate portfolio than a hospitality brand.
Bit by bit, the orange roofs disappeared, until the last Howard Johnson’s restaurant closed in Lake George, New York, in 2022.
Today, only the hotel survives under Wyndham as a mid-priced brand. The empire that once fed America’s road trips has become a piece of Americana, a nostalgic reminder of the way we used to travel.
