Whatever happened to Slip ‘N Slide?

For a generation of kids, summer wasn’t summer until someone unrolled that bright yellow streak of plastic stretched across a backyard and turned a garden hose into a carnival ride.

Invented in 1961 by a California upholsterer named Robert Carrier (after he caught his son sliding on the wet driveway), the Slip ‘N Slide became a suburban rite of passage.

Through the 1970s and ’80s, the Slip ‘N Slide was everywhere. Wham-O, the toy company behind the Frisbee and Hula Hoop, sold millions. Kids raced side-by-side, daring each other to go faster, longer, or belly-flop harder. It was freedom and chaos in one gloriously wet afternoon. You can see the TV ads here.

It became less fun in the 1990s, when adults and teens started showing up in hospital emergency rooms with spinal injuries. In 1993, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning after several adults and one teenager suffered paralysis or neck injuries using Slip ‘N Slides.

Wham-O stopped promoting them for adults and began labeling slides clearly for kids under 12 only.

From then on, Slip ‘N Slides weren’t really the same. They never disappeared—they just got a lot more restricted. You can still buy them, but they’re usually shorter, safer, and softer, and often come with built-in inflatable bumpers or splash pools and with safety disclaimers printed everywhere. 

One final fun fact: the original Slip ‘N Slide cost $8.95 in the 1960s. Today’s deluxe “mega” versions with sprinklers and pools can run over $100—and still carry that “use at your own risk” fine print.
