Whatever Happened To...

Whatever happened to Yoo-hoo?

For decades, the little brown bottle with the yellow label was everywhere: corner stores, vending machines, Little League dugouts, school lunchboxes. Yoo-hoo was the chocolate drink that tasted like chocolate milk without actually being chocolate milk, and millions of American kids never thought twice about the difference.

New Jersey grocery store owner Natale Olivieri created the drink in 1928 after watching his wife boil jars of homemade tomato sauce. He figured the same heat-and-seal trick could keep a chocolate drink from spoiling on the shelf. It worked.

By the 1950s, Yankees legend Yogi Berra was appearing in TV ads, visiting the factory floor in Carlstadt, New Jersey, and eventually becoming a company vice president. His teammates, reportedly including Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, pitched in too, and the Yankees promoted it as “the drink of champions.”

Pepsi tried to knock off Yoo-hoo off in 1966 with a rival called Devil Shake, but discovered Yoo-hoo held exclusive rights to the sterilization equipment it needed. Pepsi reportedly lost about $5 million and sold the whole operation to Yoo-hoo for $1. Meanwhile, the Yoo-hoo ads just kept rolling out, like this animated commercial from the 1970s.

The drink hit its cultural peak in the 1990s, when it became a fixture of gas station coolers and after-school snacking alongside Dunkaroos and Capri Sun. Seinfeld cemented its place in pop culture in 1992 when Brian Doyle-Murray’s sad-sack Yoo-hoo truck driver told Jerry, “It’s a fine product.”

Today Yoo-hoo still sits on shelves at Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon, now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper. It technically contains no liquid milk, just whey, dry milk, and a lot of high-fructose corn syrup.

Its biggest recent move is a Ghost-branded protein drink collaboration that sold out online in 20 minutes. The bottle has changed, but the nostalgia hasn’t.
