Inflation Rises 3.5%, Hotter Than Expected

Consumer prices rose 3.5% in March, higher than expected, signaling that inflation has accelerated over the last 12 months. The news casts doubt about the timing of any future interest-rate cuts.

Inflation was driven up by the cost of energy and shelter, which alone rose 5.7% from a year ago. Prices for gas, clothing, car repairs, and groceries also helped push inflation higher in March.

With the economy as a top election issue, President Biden and former President Trump issued warring statements. Biden blamed Republicans and corporate greed for inflation, while Trump argued Biden’s economic policies caused it.

The Dow finished over 400 points lower Wednesday as investors weighed the report’s impact on potential interest rate cuts.

GOP Group Revolts on Surveillance Bill

Conservative Republicans joined Democrats to block an effort Wednesday to reauthorize a national security surveillance program backed by House Speaker Mike Johnson. The law will expire next week unless renewed.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, allows the U.S. to collect data on non-Americans outside the country without a warrant. The reauthorization adds reforms to satisfy critics who complain the surveillance law could violate Americans’ rights.

Johnson made a strong push for passage of the reforms, and the defeat was seen as part of a simmering GOP revolt against him. He vowed to regroup and continue fighting for passage before the FISA law expires.

Olympics Track and Field Winners to Get $50,000

Track and field’s governing body will pay its Olympic athletes $50,000 for every gold medal they win at this summer’s Games in Paris, the first time a sports federation has paid prize money for victories.

The cash awards are available only for track and field events as part of a $2.4 million program set up by World Athletics, the sport’s governing body. The group’s president said it’s to recognize the athletes that bring in the federation’s revenue.

The U.S. and a few other countries give bonuses for gold medals, but no other sports federations offer prize money. The move has been hailed as a “landmark” in the move toward paying amateur athletes.
