Good Morning! On this date in 1869, Congress added two justices to the Supreme Court, bringing the total to nine, where it has remained ever since. Originally, the court had six justices, then five, six, seven, and nine. (See the History)
The Editor has watched so much basketball lately that all the scores and stats have blurred. So, let us humbly apologize for misstating the total points Purdue’s Zack Edey scored against UConn Monday night. It was 37, not 29 as we reported. No more basketball for us until the NBA Playoffs!

James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison Tuesday, becoming the first parents to be found liable for a mass shooting by their child.
Their son Ethan, now 17, pleaded guilty to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School that killed four students and injured seven in a suburb of Detroit. He was sentenced to life in prison. The gun he used was a gift from his parents.
The Crumbleys were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after a judge ruled they failed to properly secure the firearm and ignored signs of Ethan’s deteriorating mental health. They also didn’t know Ethan had the gun in his backpack on the day of the shooting.
Statements read by the victims’ families at the sentencing blamed the Crumbleys for the tragedy. “The blood of our children is on your hands too,” one father said.
Seven More States Sue Over Student Loans
Seven states, led by Missouri, filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday to block President Biden’s February “SAVE” Plan for forgiving student debt, joining 11 other states that filed suit last month.
The states’ action comes one day after Biden announced a broad new plan to cancel student loan debt, which has yet to be formalized.
Tuesday’s lawsuit targets an earlier effort by the White House to cut student debt after the Supreme Court ruled that any forgiveness plan needed congressional authorization. Instead, the SAVE plan was billed as a “student loan safety net” that canceled some student debts.
The 18 total states involved in the current lawsuit are all Republican-led states. Missouri’s attorney general argued that Biden’s “SAVE” plan is illegal and would cost U.S. taxpayers $475 billion.
Minimum Wage Going Up, Up, Up
Nearly two dozen states are raising their minimum wage this year, impacting almost 10 million workers nationwide. This chart shows the states with the highest minimum wages in America.
Washington, California, and Connecticut lead the list with minimum wages ranging between $15 and $17 an hour. The federally mandated minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
California has already mandated $20 an hour for fast-food workers. Several restaurant chains have shut franchises recently and some laid-off workers blame the new wage law.
