‘Apocalyptic’ Fires Sweep Across Maui
Hawaiian wildfires whipped by hurricane-level winds have killed at least six people and sent others into the ocean for safety in Maui and the Big Island.
Travel to Hawaii has been restricted, and the National Guard has been called out. Central Maui has been devastated as fires roared through Lahaina Town and Front Street, its popular shopping and dining zone.
“Every significant thing I owned burned down today,” said one Front Street shop owner. “I’ll be OK. I got out safely.” | Secret Search Warrant Targeted Trump, Twitter
Special counsel Jack Smith used a secret search warrant in January to obtain information from Donald Trump’s Twitter account. Twitter was held in contempt by a federal judge for delaying its response while appealing the warrant.
The news came out Wednesday when a redacted version of the judge’s decision was unsealed. Under the original court order, Twitter was prohibited from discussing the warrant with anyone, including Trump.
Twitter was fined $350,000 for its delay in producing the material and lost on appeal, despite claiming it wanted to give Trump a chance to fight the order. The court said that was the point: Prosecutors feared Trump might destroy his Twitter files.
| ESPN Jumps Into Betting Business
Penn Entertainment, owner of the Barstool sports-betting app, will pay ESPN $1.5 billion for rights to jointly relaunch the Penn app as “ESPN Bet” with promotional support across all ESPN platforms.
The deal also gives ESPN rights to purchase shares in Penn, valued at about $500 million. For its part, ESPN says it will use its platform to “educate sports fans on responsible gaming.”
The news shook the sports betting business Wednesday, with leading rival DraftKings seeing its stock drop nearly 11%. The Disney Co., owner of ESPN, also owns a stake in DraftKings.
