Biden Gets Covid as DNC Delays Vote
President Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 and will self-isolate in Delaware while still carrying out his duties, according to White House officials, who say his symptoms are “mild.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committeepushed back its deadline for nominating Biden until sometime in August under pressure from legislators who wanted more time to consider whether Biden should be the nominee.
The DNC sent a letter Wednesday saying that a proposed virtual roll call vote wouldn’t be held before Aug. 1. The party is fighting a deadline set by the state of Ohio that originally required a nominee to be named by Aug. 7.
The Ohio deadline was moved to Sept. 1, but Democrats say it’s likely they’ll face lawsuits if they miss the original deadline. At least 20 Democrats sent a letter to the DNC urging them to delay any roll call vote.
Congress Investigates Secret Service
At least six investigations have been opened into the Secret Service by committees across both chambers of Congress as legislators seek answers about the failed attempted assassination on former President Trump.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee next Monday, but legislators said Homeland Security officials intervened in her appearance.
Calls for Cheatle to resign have intensified over the week. Speaker Mike Johnson said it was “inexcusable” to allow Cheatle to remain on the job. Senator Mitch McConnell agreed, calling for new leadership at the agency.
Cheatle has said she has no intention of resigning.
Anti-Aging Drug Extends Mouse Lifespan 25%
A new drug that extended the lifespan of lab mice by 25% shows potential to slow human aging as well, scientists say.
Researchers nicknamed the treated mice “supermodel grannies” due to their youthful appearance and improved health.
The drug works by blocking a protein called IL-11, which normally increases with age and is linked to inflammation, muscle wasting, and other age-related issues.
While the results are promising, it’s still unknown if the drug would have similar effects in humans, though researchers say they’re hopeful. (See the full study here.)
