Jury Begins Deliberations in Trump Case
Jury deliberations in Donald Trump’s criminal trial began Wednesday and ended with requests by the jury to review four sections of testimony and re-hear the judge’s legal instructions.
Judge Juan Merchan had instructed the jury on the laws in question, and said to set aside personal biases, noting that the burden of proof is on the prosecution.
After three hours of deliberations, the jury requested to review three portions of testimony from media executive David Pecker’ and one from former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen. Almost an hour later, the jury asked to re-hear the jury instructions.
Judge Merchan dismissed the jury after 4 1⁄2 hours of deliberation Wednesday and said court would resume Thursday morning.
Alito Rejects Calls to Recuse Himself
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told lawmakers Wednesday that he wouldn’t recuse himself from cases involving the 2020 election after it was reported that an upside-down flag was flown at his house.
The inverted flag, and another colonial-era flag flown at Alito’s house, have been associated with former President Donald Trump’s assertions that the 2020 election was stolen, and Democrats are urging Alito to recuse himself from those cases.
Alito said the flags were flown by his wife and he wasn’t aware of it at first. When he asked her to take it down, she refused for several days. “I had nothing whatsoever to do with the flying of that flag,” he said in rejecting calls for his recusal.
The historic move recognizes the accomplishments of approximately 3,400 players who played in the Negro Leagues between 1920-1948.
Several of baseball’s all-time statistical records have changed as a result of the integration. Catcher Josh Gibson is the new single-season and career leader in batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS, displacing Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth respectively.
