Troops Sent to Help Helene Recovery
The federal government is deploying an additional 1,000 active-duty soldiers to join the 6,000 National Guard members and 4,800 federal aid workers already engaged in relief efforts to help people affected by Hurricane Helene.
The Category 4 storm caused catastrophic damage and flooding across six Southeastern states, killing over 180 people. Over 1 million homes are still without power.
President Biden surveyed storm damage in South Carolina on Wednesday, a week after the storm hit, meeting with officials and planning visits to other states affected by Hurricane Helene, aiming to counter criticism of the administration’s response.

Footage Shows Sheriff Shooting Judge
Surveillance footage played at a preliminary hearing showed Kentucky Sheriff Mickey Stines repeatedly shooting District Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers on Sept. 19, eliciting emotional reactions from the courtroom.
In court testimony Tuesday, it was revealed that Stines shot Mullins after seeing his teenage daughter’s number on the judge’s phone.
Stines allegedly told officers he acted due to a threat to his family, though investigators have not confirmed a motive.
The judge and the sheriff had been longtime friends and co-workers, but police did not clarify the significance of the daughter’s number. The case has shocked the residents of small-town Letcher County.
