US Plans Largest Shipyard Since WWII
President Trump announced a $6.6 billion plan to build what he called the largest new U.S. shipyard since World War II at Sparrows Point, near Baltimore, to produce parts for Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines.
Anduril Industries, the defense tech company co-founded by Palmer Luckey, is putting up $3.7 billion, and the Navy will pay up to $2.9 billion for what the 2-million-square-foot plant produces.
Trump also said American taxpayers will get a 40% stake in the subsidiary running the yard. What the government pays for that stake hasn’t been released.
The plant, on the site of a former Bethlehem Steel mill, will start with torpedo tubes and later build larger submarine sections. The U.S. has 26 Virginia-class subs and builds about 1.3 annually against a Navy goal of two, as officials point to China’s dominance in shipbuilding. Operations will begin around 2030 with 3,100 permanent jobs.

Isaias Set to Hit Gulf Coast as Hurricane
Tropical Storm Isaias is expected to rapidly strengthen into a hurricane today and make landfall Friday evening on the north-central Gulf Coast, forecasters said. It would be the Atlantic’s first hurricane of 2026.
Hurricane watches cover coastal Mississippi, Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle, where winds could gust 70 to 100 mph. A first hurricane this late in the season has never been recorded.
Storm surges could reach 7 feet along the Mississippi and Alabama coasts, with 3 to 6 inches of rain and up to 10 inches in spots from southeastern Louisiana to the Panhandle. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 25 counties. Track the latest advisories here.
Landfall is forecast between 5 p.m. and midnight Friday as a Category 1 or 2 storm. Rain could spread across the Southeast this weekend and reach the Ohio Valley and Northeast by midweek.

List: Israel, Poland Top Defense Spending Rates
A survey of defense spending by advanced nations showed that Israel now devotes a larger share of its economy to defense than any other country, spending 7.8% of GDP in 2025 amid intensifying multi-front conflicts in the Middle East. That’s up from its 5% average between 2015 and 2022.
Poland is second at 4.5% of GDP, the highest among NATO members and above the alliance’s new 3.5% core-defense target for 2035. The U.S. came in at 3.1%, despite spending $954 billion in absolute terms.
Overall, 28 of 33 nations in the ranking boosted defense spending relative to their 2015-2022 averages. Only five saw their GDP share decline, including the U.S. See the full ranking.
