An analysis of all 240,000 entries in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary found that E appears in roughly 11% of all words, about 6,000 more than runner-up A. It also turns up in the most common English word (“the”), the most common verb (“be”), and tens of thousands of words ending in -ed or -es.
