Question:What’s the only state that has jousting as its official sport?
Answer: Maryland designated jousting its state sport in 1962, becoming the first state to adopt any official sport. Unlike medieval jousting, Maryland’s version is a noncontact competition called ring jousting. Riders gallop along a course and use lances to spear small rings suspended from arches. Why Maryland? The sport has deep colonial roots in the state, and ring tournaments became a widespread tradition and popular community event after the Civil War.
