Question: Why does the U.S. call it “soccer” instead of “football”?

Answer: The U.S. calls it “soccer” because that’s what the British originally called it. In the late 1800s, Brits coined the slang term “soccer” from “association football” to distinguish it from rugby football (“rugger”). The nickname stuck in countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia, where other forms of football were also popular.
