Good Morning! On this date in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote a response to his critics on some scraps of paper. The open letter is now known as “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” and you can read it here.

Jury Selection Begins in Trump Trial
Day one of former President Donald Trump’s so-called hush-money trial ended Monday with no jurors selected, but it featured numerous requests by both the defense and prosecutors.
The first 96 potential jurors from a pool of several hundred New York residents were sworn in just after 2 p.m. Judge Juan Merchan dismissed more than half after they indicated they could not be fair and impartial.
Judge Merchan also denied a request for Trump to attend arguments on presidential immunity at the Supreme Court next week and delayed a decision for Trump to attend his son’s high school graduation.
The former president described the trial as political persecution in comments made after the court convened.
Israeli Officials Meet to Plan Response
Israeli military officials met Monday and discussed a potential response to Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile attack.
Iran launched hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles at Israel Saturday in response to a suspected Israeli strike in Syria two weeks ago. Israeli air defenses and warplanes, in coordination with the U.S.-led coalition of partners, reportedly destroyed 99% of the drones and missiles.
At the conclusion of Monday’s meeting, Israel’s military chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi said the recent attack would be “met with a response.” However, Halevi did not provide details, only saying Israel is still considering several plans.
Despite describing the commitment to Israel as “ironclad,” the Biden administration urged Israeli restraint and said the U.S. wouldn’t “participate in a reprisal strike on Iran.”
FBI Investigates Baltimore Bridge Collapse
Federal authorities have opened an investigation into the cargo ship that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River.
Officials from the Justice Department acknowledged the presence of FBI agents on the cargo ship Dali but refused to provide further information. The investigation appears to be separate from existing probes being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office.
