 Blanche Scraps Fund to Save AG Nomination
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche rescinded a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund Sunday, striking a deal with Republican holdouts that revived his stalled nomination to lead the Justice Department.
The fund came from President Trump’s settlement with the IRS over the leak of his tax returns and would have paid people claiming they were victims of government weaponization. Lawmakers in both parties worried Jan. 6 convicts could cash in.
Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who had threatened to block the confirmation, announced their support Monday after the department also limited the settlement’s tax audit immunity to Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is now expected to advance the nomination when it meets this morning.

Iran Denies Talks After Trump Halts Strikes
President Trump announced that new talks with Iran would begin yesterday afternoon after he called off a planned attack he said would have been the biggest since World War II.
Tehran quickly denied that. Iran’s foreign ministry said yesterday there were no direct negotiations planned with Washington, only discussions with neighboring Oman about the shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump fired back on Truth Social, branding Iran’s leadership “unbelievably duplicitous,” though he said he scrapped the attack partly at the urging of Gulf allies, including Saudi Arabia. See the post here.

US, Japan Team Up to Prop Up Sliding Yen
The United States and Japan carried out their first joint currency intervention since 2011 on Friday, buying yen in a bid to halt the Japanese currency’s slide.
The dollar touched a 40-year high of 164 yen last month, driving up the cost of food, fuel, and other imports for Japanese households.
The effort was not exactly a secret. A photographer at a Camp David cabinet meeting caught Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s notepad, which read, “To Do: Buy Japanese Yen (JPY) $5-10 bil.” See the photo here.
The deal helped America, too. Japan borrowed dollars against its U.S. Treasury holdings instead of selling them, sparing bond markets and keeping a lid on American borrowing costs, and Bessent said both allies stand ready to intervene again.
