B-52 Bomber Crashes in California Desert
Eight crew members are believed to have died after a nuclear-capable B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert on Monday.
The bomber was on a test mission that ended with a crash that sent a massive plume of black smoke into the sky above Kern County. An official release noted that “initial indications are that the crash was not survivable.” See photos here.
The bomber, which typically carries a crew of five, went down around 11:20 a.m. local time. The Air Force has not released details on injuries or the cause of the crash.
The airfield has been closed, and all inbound aircraft are being diverted. The B-52 has been in service since 1955 and was used in recent operations against Iran.

Fox Corp. to Buy Roku for $22 Billion
Fox Corporation will acquire streaming platform Roku for $160 a share in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $22 billion, combining live sports and news with the top connected TV platform in America.
The deal pairs Fox’s NFL, MLB, and Fox News portfolios with Roku’s reach into more than 100 million streaming households worldwide. Roku founder Anthony Wood will stay on and join the Fox board.
Together, the companies say they will become the third-largest player in U.S. television by viewing share. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027.

America Seals a 900-Pound Time Capsule
A 900-pound stainless steel time capsule packed with artifacts from all 50 states and U.S. territories has been sealed ahead of its July 4 burial in Philadelphia. It won’t be opened until 2276.
The contributions tell a far-ranging story of who we are. Ohio sent fabric from the Wright Brothers’ 1903 flight, Nevada tossed in casino chips, Maine donated a whale bone, and California included a fusion semiconductor. See photos of the artifacts here.
An iPhone 17, an Olympic gold medal, and a pocket Constitution from the Supreme Court also made the cut.
Built by federal scientists to survive 250 years underground, the capsule will be buried near Independence Hall under a new sculpture inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s Join or Die snake.
