Supreme Court Takes On Transgender Laws
The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments on a lawsuit challenging a Tennessee law banning transgender treatments involving hormone therapy and puberty blockers for children.
Nearly half the states in America have passed similar laws barring these therapies for children under 18, and this marks the first time the Supreme Court has agreed to rule on the constitutionality of those laws.
The suit, brought by three transgender teens, their parents, and a doctor, argues that the ban violates equal protection under the law, as the same treatments are used for non-transgender children.
The hearing is slated to take place during the Court’s next term, with oral arguments likely by the end of this year.
Flooding Collapses Bridge, Breaches Dam
Flooding in the Midwest caused a railroad bridge to collapse over the Big Sioux River and breached a dam in Minnesota, forcing residents to evacuate or be rescued from rising water.
Over 3 million people live in areas affected by flooding, including parts of Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota, where more than 18 inches of rain fell south of Sioux Falls.
The railroad bridge connecting North Sioux City, South Dakota, with Sioux City, Iowa collapsed in the rain, though there were no reports of injuries.
In Minnesota, intense flooding on Monday caused a breach in the Rapidan Dam, forcing an urgent evacuation for nearby residents and causing significant infrastructure damage. The video is here.
Panthers Win Stanley Cup
The Florida Panthers won game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last night, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 and hoisting the cup for the first time in franchise history.
The Oilers were trying to become the second NHL team to come all the way back from a 0-3 series deficit in the Final, but the Panthers took the lead for good in the second period and got the win in front of a hometown crowd.
Sam Reinhart scored the second goal, and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky held off a desperate attack in the final period, grabbing 23 total saves.
It was the first time head coach Paul Maurice has hoisted the Stanley Cup in his 26-year career.
