Death Count Rises in Israel, Gaza
At least 11 Americans were killed in the surprise Hamas attack on Israel, the State Department said on Monday.
Over 900 Israelis and 687 Palestinians have died, and tens of thousands of others have been displaced in the subsequent fighting. The conflict continues to escalate; Hamas is threatening to execute a hostage for each Israeli bomb that hits a Palestinian home without warning.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told President Biden on Sunday that Israel doesn’t have any choice but to unleash a ground operation in Gaza. The Israeli leader said, “We have to go in,” according to sources briefed on the call.
The Israeli military has activated 300,000 reservists and is mobilizing troops along the border with Gaza.
RFK Jr. Goes Independent
Yesterday, Robert Kennedy Jr. announced he’s dropping his Democratic primary bid and instead will run for president as an independent in the 2024 election. He’s been critical of the DNC’s rules that he views as rigging the Democratic primary election against him.
Kennedy has the potential to play spoiler in a close 2024 election, and many of his family members are denouncing his candidacy.
According to an Ipsos/Reuters poll, 14% of respondents plan on voting for Kennedy.
Mack Trucks Workers Reject Contract
Union workers at Mack Trucks went on strike Monday after voting down a 5-year contract agreement that negotiators had reached with the company.
Nearly 73% of workers voted against the tentative deal that included a 19% pay raise. In online forums, some Mack workers complained the proposed raise was too small to keep up with inflation.
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union said 4,000 unionized workers walked out at 7 a.m., adding to labor turmoil in the industry involving all three big Detroit automakers—GM, Stellantis, and Ford.
