China Deploys 125 Warplanes Near Taiwan
China deployed a record 125 warplanes, along with its Liaoning aircraft carrier, in large-scale military drills near Taiwan on Monday. See photos here.
The exercises, simulating a blockade of key ports, followed Taiwan’s National Day celebrations, where President Lai Ching-te rejected Beijing’s sovereignty claims over the island.
China described the drills as punishment for Taiwan’s pursuit of independence. Taiwan’s defense ministry responded by tracking Chinese military movements, while the U.S. urged Beijing to exercise restraint to maintain regional peace.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller criticized China’s response as unwarranted and warned that it risked escalating tensions.
