Good Morning! On this day in 1797. Frenchman André-Jacques Garnerin made the first successful parachute jump from a hot air balloon, descending from an altitude of about 3,200 feet (1,000 meters) over Paris using a silk parachute.
In today’s edition, we slither into the world of snakes, featuring a chance encounter between a cow and a cobra and the discovery of two new species of hooded serpents by scientists. Ophidophobians beware!

Record Rain Triggers New Mexico Floods
At least two people have died, and nearly 300 have been rescued following severe flash flooding in Roswell, New Mexico, after record-breaking rainfall on Saturday night.
Rescue operations by local agencies and the National Guard are ongoing, with floodwaters damaging homes and businesses and stranding vehicles. See photos here.
Among the rescued was Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington, who was forced to climb onto the roof of his police truck when floodwaters rose to the windows, completely surrounding his vehicle. Watch the sheriff’s video here.
The National Weather Service declared a Flash Flood Emergency for the city as 4 to 9 inches of rain fell across parts of the state. Roswell recorded 5.78 inches of rain, surpassing its all-time daily record from 1901.

Death Row Drama Unfolds in Texas
Robert Roberson, a Texas man convicted of killing his 2-year-old daughter in 2002, had his execution halted just hours before it was scheduled to occur last Thursday, Oct. 17.
Roberson was subpoenaed to testify before Texas lawmakers on Monday, temporarily pausing his execution. However, the Texas Attorney General’s office blocked his in-person appearance due to security concerns, and the legislature declined virtual testimony citing concerns relating to his autism.
The legislature is examining whether the state’s “junk science” law should overturn Roberson’s conviction for the “shaken baby” diagnosis, now often disputed and controversial.
The status of his execution is now in limbo. Gov. Greg Abbott has called on the Texas Supreme Court to overrule the lower court order temporarily halting the death sentence.
