Chinese Sneaking onto U.S. Bases
Chinese nationals have snuck onto U.S. military bases and other sensitive sites more than 100 times in recent years, often posing as tourists who are lost.
Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Defense Department, held a review last year on how to limit the attempts, which are viewed as espionage. New legislation to toughen security is being considered.
Chinese efforts include a scuba diver swimming off Cape Kennedy, a man wandering onto a missile site in New Mexico, and another who claimed he was staying at an army base in Alaska. | Supersonic Passenger Jets Set to Return
New supersonic jets with technology that quiets the loud sonic boom to more of a sonic thump could be carrying passengers at tremendous speeds within a few years: A New York-London flight could take 90 minutes.
NASA is developing its X-59, and a company called Boom is readying its XB-1 for its first faster-than-sound flight at Mach 2.2, or around 1,700 mph. It will test over the Mojave, where Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier.
The original supersonic passenger plane, the Concorde, was banned by the U.S. government 50 years ago because of powerful sonic booms that rattled windows. The new jets drastically reduce that noise. | Retailers Deploy Heavy Fog to Deter Thieves
Retailers are testing a new crime-fighting measure that releases a disorienting and blinding fog (See Photos) throughout the store when the alarm goes off.
The technology, created by Density USA, is already in use in Europe and Australia and is now rolling out in larger cities across the U.S. by retailers who have seen profits cut by waves of organized shoplifting.
The thick fog is non-toxic, but it temporarily blinds thieves, says Density’s CEO Mike Eger. “They literally can’t see it to steal it,” he said.
