Good Morning! On this day in 1978, six masked individuals raided Lufthansa Airlines’ cargo building at New York’s JFK Airport, stealing $5 million in cash and $1 million in jewelry. The notorious Lufthansa heist remains one of the largest U.S. robberies.

Panel: Trump Shooting ‘Preventable’

A bipartisan House panel report released Tuesday found that the attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump in July was “preventable and should not have happened.”

The 180-page document detailed failures by the Secret Service to properly plan, execute, and secure the site, particularly the building where the shooter fired eight shots.

The report also included 25 recommendations specific to the Butler, Pennsylvania assassination attempt and 11 general recommendations for the Secret Service.

Some of the more notable recommendations were reducing security for foreign leaders in favor of U.S. officials during the election season and moving the agency out of DHS.

Malibu Fire Forces Evacuations

Firefighters continued battling the wind-driven Franklin Fire in Malibu, California, Tuesday, which has burned at least 2,667 acres so far with no containment, officials said.

Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate as more than 8,100 homes and other structures were threatened, including celebrity seaside mansions, horse farms, and Pepperdine University, where students watched as flames raced down hillsides. You can see photos of the fire and damage here.

The Santa Ana winds, with gusts reaching 70 mph, are fueling the Franklin Fire, prompting meteorologists to warn that more fires could ignite before winds subside Thursday. See a fire map here.

Mangione Charged With Murder

A Pennsylvania judge denied bail for Luigi Mangione, now charged with the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and sent him back to jail while he fights extradition to New York.

Pennsylvania now has 30 days to obtain a warrant from Gov. Kathy Hochul before Mangione can answer charges in New York.

Mangione was arraigned Monday in Pennsylvania on charges of forgery, carrying a gun without a license, falsely identifying himself, and tampering with records, in addition to the murder charge from New York prosecutors.

The sensational nature of the case, reflecting anger at health insurers, has inspired several online sellers to list merchandise connected to the shooting, including fake bullets and Christmas ornaments bearing the words “Deny,” “Defend,” and “Depose.”
