Dual Wildfires Spread in New Mexico
As California battles wildfires that started over the weekend, New Mexico faces two fast-moving fires on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, near the village of Ruidoso. See video and photos here.
As of Tuesday afternoon, both New Mexico fires remained 0% contained. The South Fork Fire had burned approximately 15,000 acres near Ruidoso, affecting an estimated 500 buildings.
Authorities urged the 7,800 residents to evacuate, writing on social media, “GO NOW. Do not attempt to gather belongings or protect your home.”
The second fire, dubbed the Salt Fire, covered an additional 5,500 acres. The Mescalero Apache Tribe is also receiving reports of multiple additional fires on the reservation.
Senate Probes Boeing’s Safety Scandals
During a Tuesday hearing, Boeing CEO David Calhoun faced intense scrutiny from U.S. senators and families who lost loved ones in 737 MAX jet crashes.
A new whistleblower alleged that Boeing took manufacturing shortcuts and deliberately hid defects from the Federal Aviation Administration, claiming retaliation from managers for raising concerns.
A previous whistleblower, who had voiced safety concerns, died by suicide earlier this year.
Senator Josh Hawley told Calhoun, “Frankly sir, I think it’s a travesty that you’re still in your job,” highlighting his $32.8 million salary. Calhoun’s departure was already scheduled for the end of the year.
Baseball Legend Willie Mays Dies at 93
Willie Mays, one of the greatest baseball players of all time and arguably the greatest center fielder ever, died Tuesday afternoon. The “Say Hey Kid” was 93.
Mays played from 1951 to 1973, most of it with the Giants, first in New York and then in San Francisco when the team moved west in 1958. He was the National League home run champion four times and finished his career with 660 home runs and 3,283 hits.
Mays first achieved legendary status in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series, with a basket catch deep in center field that became known simply as “The Catch” and was immortalized in a photo of the moment. You can see May’s life in photos here.
