Good Morning! On this day in 1903, Barney Oldfield, billed as “America’s Premier Driver,” became the first man in America to drive his gas-powered automobile around a dirt track at the unprecedented speed of 60 mph—a mile a minute! (See Photo)
Yesterday’s story on the death of baseball legend Willie Mays inadvertently linked to a newspaper article that had a paywall. We apologize for that; it’s our policy at the Flyover to only link to stories that can be read for free. Here’s an open link to Mays’ life in photos.

U.S. Military Kills Senior ISIS Official
The U.S. military says it killed a senior ISIS official, Usamah Jamal Muhammad Ibrahim al-Janabi, in an airstrike in Syria on Sunday.
“His death will disrupt ISIS’s ability to resource and conduct terror attacks,” U.S. Central Command informed on X (formerly Twitter). The strike reportedly caused no civilian casualties.
The U.S. has pledged to continue working with regional allies to weaken ISIS and ensure its lasting defeat.
Biden Streamlines Path for Illegal Immigrants
The Biden administration announced another major immigration policy shift this week, offering 500,000 illegal immigrants a streamlined path to U.S. residency and citizenship.
This latest action will allow certain noncitizens married to U.S. citizens to stay in the country and work legally, expanding a program primarily used for immediate family of military service members.
Immigrants must have lived in the U.S. for ten years as of Monday and be married to a U.S. citizen. There is no requirement on how long the couple must have been married, but no one becomes eligible after Monday.
Biden’s recent border actions have been met with legal challenges from both liberal and conservative groups. The ACLU is suing over changes to the asylum process, and America First Legal is suing over the new immigration policy.
Social Security Issues Scam Alert
The Social Security Administration has issued a scam alert regarding fraudulent and misleading messages claiming that benefits will increase by $600 this month.
The attempted scam has been linked to unreliable websites claiming beneficiaries will receive an additional $600 or a new stimulus check this month due to a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).
Social Security officials clarified that reports of a $600 payment increase and a new stimulus check were false, and COLA adjustments have been scheduled for January 2025.
The Social Security Administration has recommended beneficiaries refer to ssa.gov/cola for accurate COLA information.
