McCarthy in Peril Over Debt Bill
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s leadership role is in peril over his support of the debt-ceiling bill. Many conservative members of Congress are deeply unhappy with the debt deal and have discussed calling a vote to force McCarthy out.
At least one House Republican, Dan Bishop, has already publicly stated his support for ousting McCarthy. More than a dozen Republicans are on record opposing the debt bill.
Other members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, who held up McCarthy’s original election to Speaker through 17 ballots, have threatened consequences if the bill passes. “There’s going to be a reckoning,” said GOP Rep. Chip Roy.

The urgent statement is signed by nearly 400 AI experts, including Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI and its ChatGPT engine, and Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind.
The public apparently shares their concerns: A recent Reuters poll found that 61% of Americans believe AI could threaten civilization.

Drones Attack Wealthy Moscow Suburb
One of Moscow’s most exclusive neighborhoods, where Vladimir Putin and other top Russian leaders have homes, was hit by drones Tuesday morning. It was the first time that residential areas of the city had been targeted since the war with Ukraine began.
Putin called the drone attack a “terrorist action” by Ukraine. The attacks damaged several buildings and forced evacuations, but no casualties were reported. (See video here)
Russia issued arrest warrants for top Ukranian commanders after the attack, though Ukraine hasn’t acknowledged sending the drones. Russia has been bombarding Kyiv and other cities with hundreds of missile attacks for weeks.
