Trump Documents Case Indefinitely Delayed
A judge delayed former President Trump’s classified documents case indefinitely Tuesday due to possible mishandling of documents by prosecutors.
The trial had been set to start on May 20th, but Judge Aileen Cannon said there were still a number of pre-trial issues before her. The ruling casts doubt on whether the trial will happen before the Nov. 5 election.
Trump’s team also argued that the Justice Department had filed some of the classified documents out of orderwhen packing them in boxes, even though the prosecutors had told the judge they were all in the exact same order.
The Justice Department admitted this week that there had been some misplacements within some boxes, but said it didn’t affect the case.
Medicare, Social Security See Gains
The “go-broke” dates for Medicare and Social Security have been pushed back thanks to an improving economy, according to the programs’ annual trustees report.
Medicare will now be able to pay full benefits through 2036, five years later than previously estimated. Social Security will be fully solvent until 2035, a year later than estimated.
When the funds’ reserves run out, they would only cover 80%-90% of benefits.
Administrators warn that despite this week’s positive news, the long-term trend may still require changes in how the programs are funded and paid out to keep them solvent past the next 10-12 years.
