Hunter Biden, House Committee in Standoff
Hunter Biden has agreed to testify before the House Oversight Committee that’s investigating Biden family finances, but he insisted that his testimony be given in public, despite the committee’s demand that the session be closed.
Committee Chairman James Comer said Biden could testify again publicly in the future, but the committee expected him to sit for a closed-door deposition on Dec. 13 as outlined in the original subpoena.
The high-stakes face-off is part of an aggressive new legal strategy Biden is pursuing. Democrats are divided on whether that will help or hurt his father’s election campaign.
Fed Hopeful for Interest Rate Cuts in 2024
Federal Reserve officials say they’re more confident in a “soft landing” for the economy and are already considering when to start cutting interest rates instead of raising them.
Christopher Waller, an influential Fed official, says if the inflation rate continues to decline for four or five more months, it would be time to review lowering interest rates. That could happen as early as spring.
Both the Bank of America and Deutsch Bank released outlooks Monday that predicted rate cuts next year as well, beginning by June, with potential further cuts later in the year.
Sports Illustrated Accused of Fake Content
Sports Illustrated, one of America’s most famous sports publications, has been accused of using AI-generated content under the bylines of non-existent writers with AI-generated headshots.
The magazine denies the claims while admitting some articles were published under fake names.
The charges stem from an expose of the fictitious writers, who had no online history and whose bio pictures were found on a site featuring AI-generated stock photos.
Sports Illustrated’s staff has written a letter of protest to the publication’s owners, who say a third-party vendor provided the content, which has been deleted from the site.
